Light Is the Cheapest Luxury

Here is a secret the finishes industry would rather you did not know: lighting changes a room more than any stone, any paint, any sofa, and it costs a fraction of all three. Every project in our portfolio looks the way it does after dark because the lighting was designed, not scattered. The method is simple enough to share.

The three layers

Ambient light is the general light a room lives in. In a luxury home it is dim, warm and mostly indirect: washes on walls, soft coves, never a grid of downlights punched through the ceiling. Task light is light where work happens: under joinery in the kitchen, beside the mirror in the bathroom, over the desk. It is allowed to be bright because it is local. Accent light is the theatre: a backlit stone wall, a washed artwork, a lit wine display. Accent light is what makes a room photograph beautifully.

Warmth is not negotiable

Colour temperature decides whether a home feels like a residence or a showroom. We specify warm light, around 2700 kelvin, through the living rooms and bedrooms, and we keep it consistent: nothing cheapens a home faster than one cool white globe in a warm room. Dim everything that can be dimmed; evenings should ramp down, not switch

Conceal the source, show the effect

The signature of luxury lighting is that you see light, not lights. Strips tucked into shadow lines, coves washing the ceiling, steps lit from the side, a stone niche glowing from an edge you cannot find. In our Cote d'Azur powder room the entire room is lit by one concealed wash down a limestone wall, and it is more glamorous than any chandelier could make it.

Statement fittings, used like jewellery

Decorative fittings matter precisely because the rest is concealed. One beautiful pendant over the island, a pair of sconces at the vanity, a lantern at the entry: chosen slowly, hung at the right height, and given a quiet room to perform in. The brass lanterns in our Glenhaven kitchen do more for that room than a ceiling of feature lights ever could.

Do not stop at the glass

Garden lighting is half the picture, because at night your windows become paintings of whatever is lit outside. Up lit trees, washed walls, a glowing pool: the same architecture by day becomes atmosphere after dark entirely through light. Plan the garden lighting with the interior, never after it.

When to bring lighting in

Lighting design happens with the joinery drawings, not after the painter leaves, because the best effects live inside the architecture. It is part of every documentation package we produce, and if your current plans show a symmetrical grid of downlights in every room, that is the moment to talk to us.off.
